Every now and then, I'll call her Bella, just to see if she responds. She started responding to Joy on her very first day in our home. That name didn't suit her in my opinion, so I changed it.
When I brought Joy home, her name was Bella (that's Joy in the photo below). I've rescued dogs and kept their name if it was fitting and I've also changed their names when I thought it was appropriate. I'm pretty certain that dogs hold no sentimental value to their names.
She may be confused for a day or two, but she'll catch on quicker than you might think. In either case, a dog can learn a new name within a few times of being called by it.
